Jan Vermeer Biography

The Dutch Baroque Master Used Light In Ways No Other Had Before.

Jan Vermeer, also known as Johannes Vermeer, was born in Delft, the Netherlands in the month of October 1632 and the first recorded date for him was when he was
baptized into the Reformed Church on October 31 that same year. Vermeer was a Dutch Baroque painter renowned for his masterful treatment of light and his serene,
intimate domestic scenes. His father, Reynier Janszoon, was a silk weaver and art dealer, which likely introduced Vermeer to the world of painting from an early age.

Little is known about Vermeer’s early training, but it is believed he may have apprenticed with a local painter, perhaps Carel Fabritius or under the broader influence of
artists from the Utrecht Caravaggisti school. In 1653, at the age of 21, he became a member of the prestigious Guild of Saint Luke in Delft, signifying his professional
status as a painter. That same year he married Catharina Bolnes, with whom he would have 15 children, though only 11 survived infancy.

Vermeer’s artistic output was remarkably small - only about 35 paintings are firmly attributed to him. Despite this limited number, his work is celebrated for its exquisite
detail, balanced composition, and use of natural light. His most famous paintings include Girl with a Pearl Earring, The Milkmaid, View of Delft, and Woman
Holding a Balance. These works often depict women engaged in quiet, everyday activities, set within tranquil interior spaces.

During his lifetime, Vermeer was respected locally but never achieved widespread fame. He struggled financially, particularly during the economic downturn following
the Franco-Dutch War in the 1670s. He died on December 15, 1675 in Delft, presumably from stress-related causes exacerbated by financial hardship, and was
buried in he Oude Kerk in Delft.

If you’re looking to bring that same atmosphere into your home or office consider adding a hand-painted Jan Vermeer reproductions to your collection.
Our museum-quality oil painting commissions are meticulously painted with the same light, color and detail to accuracy of his masterpieces.
